Athletes from Hedley High School and Hedley Junior High turned in several strong performances and personal-best marks at the Miami track meet on March 13.
Jose Prieto led the Owls in the field events, placing second in both the shot put and discus. Prieto threw the shot 35’4” for second place and recorded a personal-best mark of 107’9” in the discus, also finishing second.
He also competed in the 400-meter run, placing 11th in one minute, 15.26 seconds.
Payton Inman delivered multiple top finishes for Hedley. Inman placed fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.11 seconds and fourth in the 800 meters in 2:28.26. He added a sixth-place finish in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 25.88 seconds, finished fifth in the high jump with a personal-best leap of 5’2”, and took seventh in the long jump at 17’2½”.
Damien Alston recorded a personal-best time of 28.30 seconds in the 200 meters to place ninth and finished ninth in the 400 meters in 1:08.80. He also competed in the 800 meters. Brady Goodwin placed 10th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:11.76 and also competed in the shot put and discus.
On the girls side, Abbi Hood competed in several events for the Lady Owls. Hood placed sixth in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 3:44.22 and finished 11th in the 400 meters in 1:32.22. She also placed seventh in both the long jump (11’9½”) and triple jump (24’2½”) and competed in the high jump.
Hedley Junior High athletes also competed in Miami on March 13, battling strong winds and the absence of one runner due to illness but still earning several awards.
Jose Martinez had an outstanding meet for the junior high boys, winning the 800 meters in 2:48.00 and the discus with a throw of 81’1”. He also placed second in the 400 meters in 1:08.73 and third in the 100 meters in 13.39 seconds.
Jeremiah Shelley captured two distance titles, winning the 1,200 meters in 4:26.44 and the 2,400 meters in 9:24.00. He also finished fourth in the 400 meters in 1:13.82 and competed in the long jump.
Maddex Gay placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 27’11½”, fourth in the 800 meters in 3:00.00 and sixth in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 1:14.72. Lucas Booth placed fifth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 25’11”.
Paul Berry finished fourth in the 2,400 meters with a personal-best time of 10:53.62, while Jose Paita posted personal-best times in both the 1,200 meters (5:13.07) and 2,400 meters (11:23.88), placing sixth in both races.
For the junior high girls, Nayeli Rodriguez turned in one of the top performances of the meet. Rodriguez won the 800 meters in a personal-best 2:59.00 and also captured first place in the 2,400 meters in 10:26.44. She added a third-place finish in the 400 meters in 1:15.00 and set a personal best in the long jump at 10’5” to place eighth.
Kinzlee Paris placed third in the 1,200 meters with a personal-best time of 5:35.88 and finished 11th in the 400 meters in 1:33.00.
