Two men died in separate accidents on US 287 in Donley County last Friday, August 21.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the first accident occurred at 1:07 a.m. approximately two miles west of Hedley.
Robert Allan Hill, age 68, of Amarillo was driving a 2016 Nissan Frontier westbound (the wrong way) in the eastbound lanes on US 287. Gustavo Nunez Perez, age 61, of Amarillo was towing a trailer with a 2016 Ford F350 westbound on US 287 and attempted to avoid Hill’s Nissan, but he was unable to mis the car, resulting in a near head-on collision.
After the impact, Hill’s vehicle caught fire; and a third vehicle, a 2021 Toyota Carolla driven by 26-year-old Sean Blake Wolfe of Amarillo, also traveling westbound, lost control while going through the debris in the roadway and struck the Ford truck.
Hill was pronounced dead on the scene from the injuries sustained during the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
Later the same day, a second accident occurred on US 287 approximately two miles northwest of the Hall County line at 1:30 p.m.
The DPS preliminary investigation of that single-vehicle accident revealed that David Donald Beineke, age 76, of St. George, Utah, was driving a 2003 Ford F-150 northwest on US 287 when he failed to drive in a single lane. The pickup left the roadway, entered the center median, and rolled over multiple times.
The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle as a result.
Beineke was being transported to UMC in Lubbock by a medical helicopter when he died in transit due to the injuries sustained in the crash.
The crash also remains under investigation by the Department of Public Safety.
