Broncos begin season with great effort against Vega

The Clarendon Broncos have been working hard this summer and began football practice at the beginning of August with Brenton Whitaker, who is new to the Broncos as Head Coach of the team.

After participating in preseason scrimmages, the Broncos faced off against the Vega Longhorns at home last week in their season opener. Despite the four-point loss, 28-32, the Broncos played every down with a renewed energy in the new season. They are quickly adapting to a new coaching style and are working together to improve their game.

Offensively, junior quarterback Kreed Robinson led the team with confidence completing four of sixteen passes for 31 total yards. Robinson hit Parker Haynes two times for 23 yards and twice to Caleb Herbert for eight yards. The Broncos were able to rush for 312 yards, which was their strength against Vega. Markeal Davis led the way with 127 yards on 17 carries finding the endzone twice and adding two extra point conversions. 

Robinson was able to make several good gains on six carries from his QB position racking up 104 yards and Caleb Herbert ran the ball well, finishing with 67 yards on five carries. Parker Haynes ran the ball twice for eight yards, and Braxton Gribble accounted for six yards on one carry.

Defensively, the maroon and white were zeroed on the Longhorn offense and played a strong game as a team. Davis was able to pull down five solo tackles and help with nine assists. Brice Wagner and T.J. Smith each had four tackles and five and one assist respectively, while Robinson racked up three tackles and assisted once. 

Haynes was in on eight tackles, and Josh Farley was present on five more tackles. Tyler Davis, Braylon Rice, Brance Bell, Herbert, Hunter Caison, Dakotah Jameson, Brentley Gaines, Shaun Childers, Josh Holt, and Paxton English were in on several tackles as well.

Rice and Jameson used their height to break up two different Longhorn passes, and Gaines grabbed one interception. Herbert also had one sack in the game.

Overall, the Broncos’ performance was positive and gained valuable insight on things to work on in practice. They are determined to improve as they prepare to face Sanford-Fritch Friday night on the road beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Bronco JV and JH teams will host Sanford-Fritch on Thursday, September 3, beginning at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on the Kenny King Field in Bronco Stadium.
