Patricia Kathleen Spier

Patricia Kathleen “Kathy” Spier, 78, formerly of Hedley, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2026, in Crowley, Texas.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Rowe Cemetery in Hedley, with Rev. Stan Cosby officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.

Kathy was born December 10, 1947, in Clarendon to Windoal and Patsy Spier. She spent most of her life in Texas, with periods of time in New Mexico and Colorado during her childhood. She attended schools in all three states before returning to the Texas Panhandle in the sixth grade, attending Clarendon schools, then Lelia Lake in the seventh grade, and beginning at Hedley in the eighth grade.

Kathy graduated from Hedley High School in 1966 as a member of a class of just 13 students. She proudly ran for Hedley Cotton Queen all four years of high school, placing fourth, third, and twice as runner-up. In 1966, she was honored as the Hedley Lions Club Queen.

Kathy began her working career at Burlington Industries in Memphis where she worked in the packing department, counting and loading sheets. She later moved to Fort Worth and worked at St. Joseph Hospital from approximately 1970 through 1975-76. There, she served as records manager in the Purchasing Department and as Major Moveable Equipment Manager, responsible for counting and inventorying the hospital’s major moveable equipment. Her dedication even took her into surgical areas, where she would put on surgical attire to inventory equipment while procedures were taking place.

In the mid-1970s, Kathy returned to Amarillo and began a long career at the Pantex Plant. She worked in the Security Department for 25 years, retiring in 2001 following an on-the-job injury. During her years at Pantex, she held a “Q” clearance and worked in payroll, records management, lock and combination control for the entire facility, and served as secretary for the construction guards. Kathy was also well known for her generosity toward her coworkers and guards, often baking food and taking her homemade goodies to work.

After returning to Hedley, Kathy devoted herself to her community. The Hedley Cotton Festival had taught her how to “sell them tickets,” and she became an enthusiastic and successful fundraiser. She was instrumental in raising money for the new Hedley Senior Citizens Building and continued to give her time and talents to numerous local organizations.

Kathy served as Director of the Hall County Home Delivered Meals program in Memphis and later worked with the Hedley Senior Citizens, beginning as a bookkeeper and eventually becoming director and secretary. She served as secretary of the Methodist Church, served on the Hedley City Council, was a member of the Hedley Lioness Club and the Clarendon Red Hatters Club, and created bulletins and printed materials for the church, American Legion Post 287, and the Lioness Club.

While recovering from her Pantex injury, Kathy began researching and documenting Hedley history and the history of Hedley schools, compiling information spanning from approximately 1910 through 2000. Her love for her hometown and its history was evident in the time and care she devoted to preserving its stories for future generations.

Kathy retired from the Hedley Senior Citizens in August 2017 but continued working part-time as a receptionist for the City of Hedley. Following the death of her mother in December 2021, Kathy sold the family home in Hedley and moved into an apartment there. In June 2024, she moved to Burleson to live with her brother Jack and his wife, Shirley. As her health continued to decline, Kathy moved to a nursing home in Crowley in September 2025.

Although Kathy did not have children of her own, she had a deep love for animals and cherished the companionship they brought into her life. Her compassion for animals remained an important part of who she was.

She was preceded in death by her father, Windoal C. Spier; her mother, Patsy Blanks Spier; and her brother, David Windoal Spier.

She is survived by her brother, Jack L. Spier and wife Shirley (Nivens) Spier of Burleson, Texas; niece Marci Deanne Spier; niece Jennifer (Spier) Hunter and husband Antonio; nephew Christopher Spier and wife Kendra; great-nieces Emory, Daisa, and Amiya Harris; great-niece Hannah Cox; and great-nephews Josh Cox and Caleb Neil Spier.

Kathy will be remembered for her dedication to Hedley, her willingness to serve others, her talent for bringing people together, her love of history, her generosity, and her enduring love for animals. Her years of service and involvement left a lasting mark on the community she called home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Rowe Cemetery Association in Hedley or to a favorite animal rescue shelter.
