The Clarendon Enterprise - Spreading the word since 1878.
The Clarendon Bronco football team met up with two strong teams early in the season but remain positive as they head into their next matchup with Roscoe.
The Broncos lost to a good Trinity Christian team in Lubbock 0-56 last Friday night. They were unable to get anything going in the game, racking up 130 offensive yards.
Senior quarterback Harrison Howard was successful finding a receiver ten out of eighteen times, but two interceptions hindered the Broncos’ attempts to find the endzone. Howard also rushed for 31 yards and grabbed four tackles on defense.
Shane Hagood, who is just a sophomore, carried the ball 18 times for 60 yards plus five in the air and senior Easton Frausto finished with 19 total yards and three tackles on the night. Tyler Cavanaugh posted eight total yards and Bryce Williams had one catch.
Colton Caudle was a workhorse on defense with seven tackles and Jared Musick followed with six.
Grant Haynes added five tackles and Mason Sims grabbed four.
The Broncos are continuing to work hard to improve each practice in preparing for their next opponents and will travel to Floydada Friday night, September 8 to take on Roscoe at 7:00 p.m.
The Junior High Colts opened their season at home last week with a loss to Trinity Christian at 24-6 with Markael Anderson scoring the lone Colt touchdown. The Colts will host Roscoe in Bronco Stadium on Thursday, September 7, at 5:00 p.m.
The Clarendon Broncos hosted Panhandle in their season opener in Bronco Stadium last Friday night; and despite playing hard, the Broncos lost 12-32.
Penalties seem to hinder the Broncos’ attempts to gain any ground against the Panthers.
The Broncos’ first two games on the schedule are tough ones with Trinity Christian this week after the loss to the Panhandle. But the Broncos played with a lot of energy and will continue to rely on their ability to run the routes and quickness in the backfield to score TDs.
Panhandle racked up 221 yards rushing and 105 yards passing for a total of 326 yards in the win. The Broncos had a good night passing the ball. Senior QB Harrison Howard passed for 185 yards in 15 attempts and the Broncos posted 126 rushing yards for 311 overall yards. Howard also had six carries for 24 rushing yards and one tackle on defense. Mason Sims had 56 yards on five catches and accounted for a Bronco touchdown. Lyric Smith was two for 18 in the air and had eight carries and one TD on the ground.
Jaxan McAnear posted 39 total yards on the ground on three carries, with the longest run being 22 yards and Easton Frausto carried twice for 27 yards. Shane Hagood ran the ball 12 times for 42 yards with 11 yards as his longest.
Defensively, the Broncos made good stops throughout the night.
Sims, Jared Musick, and Grant Haynes racked up seven tackles each with Sims getting a QB sack, and Musick getting two tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Finishing the game with six tackles each was Frausto, Colton Benson, and Anthony Ceniceros. Benson and Ceniceros were able to cause a loss on the play tackling behind the line of scrimmage. Smith had four tackles and one interception, McAnear had four tackles and one tackle behind the line, and Dalton Coles racked up four tackles. Waite Dushay, Ranger Drenth, Howard, and Hagood each posted one tackle in the game.
The Broncos will travel to Lubbock Friday, September 1, to take on Trinity Christian at 7:00 p.m.
The Colts will kick off their 2023 season against Trinity Christian at home on Thursday night beginning at 5:00 p.m.
The Broncos, Lady Broncos, and Lady Colts participated in the Canyon 6-Mile Relay cross-country meet last Saturday and posted great times to start the season.
Bronco runner Bryce Williams picked up right where he left off last year with a first-place finish as an individual. Williams’ winning time was 8:28. Brice Wagner finished third with a time of 9:03, and Tanner Cavanaugh was 23rd with an 11:50.
The Lady Broncos’ team of Madi Benson, Elliot Frausto, Presley Smith, and Berkley Moore placed third in the 1A-4A division behind Dalhart and Canadian with a time of 40:46. Another Lady Bronco team finished 17th with a time of 46:40. Team members are Tandie Cummins, Gracie Ellis, Kashlyn Conkin, and Lilly Robinson.
The Lady Colts had two teams compete as well with the team of Addy Havens, Karli Jones, Landry King, and Brilyn Bruce finishing in ninth place with a time of 50:47. The team of Josie Murillo, Sequoia Weatherton, Hadley Bebout, and Makynna Williams finished in a time of 58:20 for 17th place.

It’s not hard to be kind. That’s the message coming from Kindness Corner every Friday in Hedley as one family provides treats and love to school kids and employees.
“We just want to be generous with what God has given us and pour it back into these kids,” Melissa Barlow said.
Barlow and her husband, Kerry, live with their granddaughter, 11-year-old Ava, between Hedley and Quail and have gotten involved with the Hedley community over the last seven years through the Methodist Church there.
“We were working Vacation Bible School last summer, and we realized that there’s nothing for these kids in Hedley,” Barlow said. “They don’t even have a place to go buy a candy bar.”
So, in August 2022, the Barlows purchased a snow cone machine, set up behind the Hedley Methodist Church to have access to electricity, and started giving away free snow cones after school on Fridays. Soon the Martindale family offered the use of their property and electricity across from the school and under some big shade trees.
Kindness Corner was born, and Barlow says the name just morphed into existence.
“It’s just all about acts of kindness and how easy it can be to be kind,” she said.
About 50 kids would enjoy the snow cones each week. As the semester progressed and the days became colder, Kindness Corner switched from snow cones to hot chocolate and homemade cookies. When windy weather came with the spring, they introduced canned drinks and pre-packaged snacks. Then they moved back to snow cones as the school year drew to an end in May.
The Barlows shut down for the summer and then brought the Kindness Corner back for the new school year last week. They are thinking about ways they could continue the practice during the summer months next year.
Barlow said the free treats are for anyone at the school from pre-kindergarten all the way through seniors and are also available for school employees.
“We’ll even take someone a snow cone if we see them out working hard in their yard, or we’ll bring them a drink,” she said. “It’s just about being kind, and we just want to share the love.”
It’s not a fancy operation, just a table and a sign that says, “snow cones,” but people get used to it and by the time the season changes, they already know they are there without the sign.
The Barlows don’t ask for donations or help, but they have accepted it. Most donations come in the form of people helping at the stand or making homemade cookies, and one person donated snow cone syrup. Sharon Alexander, Kari Lindsey, Kay Manuel, and Bonnie Brown are among those who have helped, and some members of the Methodist church have also made cookies. Lois Marie Stevens is the daughter of Hedley’s coach and has been helping while waiting on her visa to go be a missionary in Mozambique.
The family mission has turned into a blessing, Barlow said, and she notes that there are more kids coming to the Kindness Corner this year than last.
“It’s been really fun,” she said. “They know us, and we know many of them by name. Kari Lindsey helps us get to know the kids.
The only kids who can’t enjoy the Kindness Corner are the students who have to ride the bus to Clarendon or Memphis. They don’t have time to go to the snow cone stand and wouldn’t be able to take the treats on the bus anyway.
“That’s been hard. We don’t really want to exclude anyone,” Barlow said, “but kids in Memphis or Clarendon have a choice of other things. These kids in Hedley don’t have anything.”
