Clarendon and Hedley volunteer firefighters joined other area departments and state resources in battling the Lefty Fire in Hall County last week.
The fire started on Thursday, April 2, and was contained on Friday with more than 1,300 acres burned.
The fire started about 25 miles west of Childress.

Officials reported that support came from Turkey VFD, Quitaque VFD, Memphis VFD, Silverton VFD, Motley County VFD, Childress FD, Clarendon VFD, Hedley VFD, Wellington VFD, and the Texas Forest Service as well as state strikeforce crews from all over Texas and as far away as Washington State.
A social media post from the Turkey Volunteer Fire Department said the forward progression of the fire was stopped Thursday night around 9 p.m. and said the forest service and strike team firefighters remained with the fire overnight. A Type 1 helicopter that was able to draft water from tanks on the ground. Turkey, Memphis, and Silverton firefighters returned Friday with water tankers and collapsible, portable tanks. They refilled each tanker several times while the helicopter drew up 1000-2000 gallons per trip to go drop over the fire.
These crews and the helicopter were released Friday evening around 5:00.
The Clarendon Lions Club recently has made donations of $1,000 each to the Clarendon and Howardwick volunteer fire departments for expenses related to the Eight Ball Fire in February.
Lions District Governor Deanna Porter worked with the Texas Lions Foundation to secure disaster relief following the wildfire, which burned more than 13,500 acres, threatened the City of Howardwick, and led to evacuations of residences in that city and near Lake Greenbelt.
The funds were quickly approved and then handed over to the Clarendon Lions Club to determine how best to disperse the money.
The club made a donation to the District 2-T1 Lions Disaster Relief Team, which brought its mobile kitchen to Howardwick on February 18 to prepare food for about 100 first responders.
Lions officials then worked with representatives of the Clarendon and Howardwick fire departments to identify expenses from the fire that could be covered by the grant funds. Clarendon had two fire trucks that needed repairs following the Eight Ball Fire, and Howardwick had tires that needed replacing after the fire.
Ray Crump was born on December 5, 1964—a snowy day his mother never let him forget and loved to tease him about for years. He passed peacefully on March 27, 2026, in Amarillo, surrounded by his family.

Ray was known for his big personality—loud, talkative, and full of life. He had a presence that filled every room, and you always knew when Ray was around. He loved to visit, tell stories, and make people laugh, and his voice and energy will be deeply missed.
Above everything, Ray was a proud and devoted father to his sons, Mike and Chris. He loved nothing more than watching them play sports for the Clarendon Broncos. Whether cheering from the stands or talking about the game afterward, Ray was their biggest fan—passionate, supportive, and always present.
Ray also had a deep love for the cowboy way of life. He spent many years working on ranches and in feed yards across Clarendon and the surrounding areas. One of his greatest passions was roping, and he cherished the time spent doing what he loved most, surrounded by good people and open country.
He was a deeply caring and dedicated husband to his wife, Michael Elizabeth Crump. When she began to lose the ability to care for herself, Ray stepped in without hesitation, becoming her caregiver. He showed unwavering patience, compassion, and love during that time, living out what it truly means to stand by someone through all of life’s challenges.
Ray was preceded in death by his father, Morris Crump; his brother, Randy Crump; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
He is survived by his wife, Michael Elizabeth Crump of Pampa; his mother, Janie Gibson of Clarendon; his stepmother, Linda Crump of Clarendon; his sister, Laura and husband Jason of Amarillo, and their children, Avery and Ethan; his son, Chris Crump of Turkey, his wife, Rebecca, and their children, Keighen, Asher, Carter, and Addie; his son, Mike Crump of Hedley, his wife, Julie, and their children, Kyndall, Waverley, and Rankin; his sister-in-law, Buckie Crump of Clarendon; his stepbrothers, Elwyn and wife Pam of Hedley, Wyman and wife Shonda of Amarillo, and Willie and wife Holly of Memphis; and his step-grandchildren Madalyn and Nolan Phillips of Singer.
He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Ray will be remembered for his big heart, his strong voice, his love for his family, and the life he built doing what he loved. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and in the family he loved so fiercely.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2026, in the First Baptist Church in Clarendon with Josey Shadle, officiating.
Cremation and arrangements are under the care of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.
