Broncos win again, 40 – 21
They are in it to win it, and the Broncos’ performance in the their three-game road trip proves that fact.
Unstoppable for the moment, the Broncos are pulling together as a team and have an intensity that makes other teams drool. Their latest victims were the Sunray Bobcats who had defeated the Broncos the past eight years. Led by the dominating force of the senior squad, the Broncos whipped the Bobcats 40-21 and left them stunned and shaken.
Senior signal caller Johnny Gaines continues to roll as he has guided his team to three big victories in a tough series on the road.
According to head coach Gary Jack, the Sunray game was the fourth out of six games that the Broncos have scored over 40 points a game and in those three games, the Broncos racked up 137 points to only 62 for their opponents. Right now, that is huge for the Clarendon team. They have one more game until the beginning of district play, which will begin October 22 at home.
“We are just a little banged up from some very physical games,” Jack said.
“It will be good to have an open day (next week) so we can get healed up and ready for district. We want to get a big win over Gruver (this Friday) and go into district at 6-1.”
The Broncos stunned Sunray early on with huge hits by Chris Crump and Bradley Watson.
“Chris waxed a guy on a kick off,” Jack said.
“Bradley Watson got a big hit, and then Chris got another big hit. It pretty much shut their intensity down.
“They didn’t quit, but the first quarter we opened up with a 20-7 lead and they just never got any closer.”
The Broncos scored on their first four possessions of the game as they racked up 414 total yards of offense. Chris Crump crossed the goal line first on a 13-yard run, and Wes Williams turned six on a huge 68-yard run.
Johnny Gaines capped the first quarter scoring with a 26-yard run. Mike Crump added a score to the rally in the second quarter on a one-yard run to go up by 12 points at the break. Chris Crump and Williams added the last two scores of the game on one and fifteen yard runs respectively.
“I was tickled to death with the win,” Jack said. “We’ve had six very physical games in a row. Right now, we’re hitting on all cylinders offensively. It’s been a good stretch for us.”
The Broncos set the tone for the game early and according to Jack, the offensive line did a great job blocking for the run and protecting for the pass.
Jacob Pigg, Trent White, R.J. Nino, Coby Braughton, David Roberts, Clayton Shields, and Jayson Pigg are all part of that determined line.
Defensively, the Broncos had huge hits and an overall great performance. Williams had 13 tackles and one sack, Gaines had 11 tackles, and Brayden Phillips had 8 tackles and one interception.
“A lot of people played well at different times,” Jack said. “I was really pleased with their play.”
The Broncos will host the Gruver Greyhounds Friday night in Bronco Stadium for Homecoming. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Broncos fly past Skyrockets, 49-20
The Broncos’ first six points came on the second play of the game when quarterback Johnny Gaines ran it in from 62 yards out and kicked the extra point.
The Broncos’ intensity proved to be Wellington’s downfall in the 49-20 massacre.
To add insult to injury, the Broncos forced two Rocket fumbles early that resulted in scores for Clarendon. Gaines threw a 17-yard strike to Bradley Watson and Mike Crump scored from 15 yards out to put the Broncos up 20-6 in the opening quarter of play.
“That was pretty fun to do that over there,” head coach Gary Jack said.
“We had some nice breaks early and we capitalized on them. We went at them hard; and by the third quarter, they didn’t know what hit them.
“It was a sweep all the way around last week against Wellington from third grade through high school.”
The Broncos racked 365 total yards in the win and the scoring was split between five different players. Watson and Gaines teamed up for another 15-yard TD in the second quarter with Gaines adding the two-point bonus to go up 28-6 at the break.
Clarendon picked up in the second half of play just as they had left it in the opening half when Jerami Johnson caught a Gaines pass on Wellington’s 35-yard line and ran it in for another Bronco score. In the Rockets’ next series, the Broncos forced a fumble that Gaines picked up for a 60-yard touchdown, which gave Clarendon a 42-6 lead. Wes Williams scored in the final period on a 14-yard run to round out the Broncos’ scoring.
“With just 11:50 left in the game, we were up 49-6,” Jack said. “It was a pretty convincing win for us, and they were in shock. The kids did and great job and responded well. Our coaching staff did a great job, too.”
Jerami Johnson played well according to Jack. He caught a touchdown pass and had several tackles on defense.
“Johnny had his normal good game,” Jack said.
“And Bradley Watson had a big game, too, and made some great catches in traffic.”
Jack said both lines played well and everyone did a great job in the win. But Johnson will be out for a few weeks with a leg injury.
“With Jerami being out, we’ll have to juggle some people around,” Jack said.
The Broncos will end their three-game road trip next Friday night when they go to Sunray.
Jack knows it will be a tough game.
“Sunray is a tough team, but we’ll have to guard from having a letdown after such a big win. It’s been awhile since we’ve beat Sunray. It will be a good game.”
The game with Sunray will be held Friday, October 1, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
CHS Homecoming will be October 8. The Broncos will take on the Gruver Greyhounds. Kickoff will be at 7:30.
Clarendon exterminates Tulia Hornets
After spotting the Tulia Hornets seven points in the opening quarter of play, the Broncos took control of the ball and the field to grab a 48-21 win over their opponent on the road Friday night.
The win put the Broncos at 3-1 for the year and that much closer to their goal of post-season play.
Quarterback Johnny Gaines scampered into the end zone from one yard out to put up two scores in the second period that got the Broncos rolling.
Charleston Harris opened the game up when he took a kickoff return 90 yards to add six before the break.
“It was a crazy game, but a good win for us,” head coach Gary Jack said.
“We just kept moving the ball like we wanted to and offensively had a good game.”
The Bronco defense worked well also. Mike Crump was able to run back a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, and Brayden Phillips snagged an interception in the third quarter to go up 21 points. Gaines had another four-yard run for a score and Trajen Johnson sealed the deal with a seven-yard run in the final period.
“We had a couple of breakdowns on defense and let them score,” Jack said. “We bent, but we didn’t break.”
Jack noted that the Broncos played a great defensive game. Gaines had 12 tackles and caused a fumble, Wes Williams had 10 tackles, Jacob Pigg had nine tackles and three sacks, Mike Crump had nine tackles, Trevor Cobb had seven tackles and one recovered fumble, Nathan Dziedzic had five tackles three sacks and one caused fumble, and Coby Braughton caused a punt block.
Also Jerami Johnson and Jon Levario had a good defensive game according to Jack.
“Our offensive line did a good job, too,” Jack said. “R.J. Nino, Jacob Pigg, Jayson Pigg, Coby Braughton, and Nathan Dziedzic did a darn good job for us.”
The line helped the Clarendon offense rack up 308 total yards with 211 of those coming on the ground.
“We pulled up about 10 players from junior varsity and they did a good job for us and they were all able to play. It was a long and exhausting game for us because they threw so much, but it was a good win.”
This week’s game with Wellington will be a tough game according to Jack.
“I feel like this could be a very close game,” Jack said. “We hope to be well by Friday and have our starters back.”
The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Wellington Friday, September 24. The junior high and junior varsity will play at home Thursday, September 23, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Broncos corral Mustangs, 20 – 6
Before very vocal fans, the Broncos managed a 20-6 win to put them at 2-1 for the year.
According to head coach Gary Jack; the game was an old-fashioned hard-fought game.
On the stat sheet, the Mustangs’ total yards came in at 23 more than the Broncos, but on the field where it counts, the Broncos dominated the entire night.
They were determined to fight to the end and the intensity the Broncos demonstrated proved they are a force to be reckoned with this year.
Quarterback Johnny Gaines threw for 78 yards and hit Mike Crump for a 21-yard strike right after the break.
Crump had scored the first six for the Broncos in the second quarter of play on a five-yard run to put the Broncos up.
The Bronco defense did not allow the Mustangs to score until the fourth quarter and were successful in defending the two-point conversion.
“Our defense did a lot of good things,” Jack said. “And they held Wheeler to only six points. Mike Crump had 16 tackles, and Chris Crump had 14 with one fumble recovery.”
Jack also noted that Charleston Harris added nine tackles, Jacob Pigg had seven tackles and one sack, and David Roberts helped with five tackles and one sack.
“Jon Levario and Johnny Gaines each had an interception, too,” Jack added.
Offensively, the Broncos made little progress in the first half of play, but stayed solid to add two scores in the second half.
“We just couldn’t get anything going offensively early,” Jack said. “But we did in the second half of the game. We stepped up and took care of business. Our running game went well and we were able to pass enough to do what we needed to do.”
Overall, Jack thought the Broncos played well and came out of a very physical game fairly healthy. They will use this week in practice to prepare for the Tulia game Friday night on the road.
“We are entering into a tough stretch of games,” Jack said. “We go to Tulia Friday night and they’re having a good year so far. They’re a 2A school and much improved from last year.
“The three games we have on the road will be a big challenge for us.”
Jack is appreciative of the huge crowds at Bronco Stadium and is excited to see the support.
The Broncos will travel to Tulia to take on the Hornets on Friday, September 17, and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Come support your hometown team.
Broncos dominate Longhorns
Senior Mike Crump racked up 157 yards rushing and three touchdowns to lead the Broncos’ in their scoring frenzy. Crump scored from 48 yards out in the first period and added an eleven-yard run in the third. His biggest run into the endzone came in the final period on a 62-yard run.
Johnny Gaines, who rushed for 98 yards, added a touchdown and scored six on a punt return in the first quarter of play.
Chris Crump scored on a 16-yard run, and Wes Williams took it in from 42 yards out to round out the scoring. Williams finished with 84 yards, and Chris Crump added 48 yards in the win.
According to head coach Gary Jack, the Broncos’ did not throw the ball a whole lot, but were able to succeed on the ground.
Defensively, the Broncos were on their game and Jack credited Mike and Chris Crump, Wes Williams, Johnny Gaines, Bradley Watson, and Jayson and Jacob Pigg on a great night.
Overall, Jack was happy to get the win.
“We got up pretty quick on them,” Jack said. “But we let them have a touchdown in the first quarter. We weren’t as sharp as we should have been, but we did a lot of good things. We need to clean up a few things in practice this week.”
Jack feels the Broncos will learn from their mistakes and keep going as they prepare for Wheeler Friday night.
“Wheeler always plays hard,” Jack said.
The Broncos will take on Wheeler at home Friday, September 10, before beginning a long, three-game stint on the road.
Kickoff is at 7:30 pm at Bronco Stadium.
Broncos fall short against New Deal
The Broncos put together a game plan Friday night at home that almost produced an upset. Their two-point season opener loss to New Deal could have easily gone either way.
One negative the Broncos faced was turnovers against the Lions.
“We had four turnovers in the game and you just can’t make that many mistakes against a good team. The interception in the fourth quarter was key.”
The deal-breaker came early in the fourth quarter right before the interception as the Broncos were moving the ball down the field to the end zone.
Only one offensive block away from making a great run for a much-needed touchdown, the Broncos were denied the six points. The succeeding gave New Deal the go ahead score with just ticks on the board.
The Broncos managed another seven points when Johnny Gaines ran it in from 10 yards out and added the bonus kick. But time was not on the Broncos’ side and they took the 21-23 loss.
Gaines was responsible for all three touchdowns on the night with an eight-, 33-, and 10-yard run. He also kicked all three extra points.
“Johnny had a great game for us on both sides of the ball,” Jack said.
Gaines also added 70 yards rushing and several yards passing. He racked up 20 tackles and one interception on the night as well.
Mike Crump added 17 tackles, and Bradley Watson played good defense according to Jack.
Brayden Phillips caught the ball well and Wes Williams played well both offensively and defensively.
“Our offensive and defensive line did a good job,” Jack said. “I was pleased with the team’s effort and intensity.”
It looked as though the Broncos would upset the number six ranked Lions as they held a 7-3 lead at the break.
Jack feels the Broncos and Lions could see each other again down the road.
“We need to correct a few things, but we feel we’re on track and on target to play them again. We’re a better team for playing a team like that.”
The Broncos will take on Vega on the road Friday, September 3, at 7:30 pm.
Broncos on target for a great season
The final scrimmage was played as the Broncos ended their pre-season schedule Thurdsay night in Stinnett against West Texas High before opening their regular season this coming Friday night.
According to head coach Gary Jack, the Broncos did an outstanding job against the Commanches.
“The kids did well,” Jack said. “This scrimmage was almost identical to the one we played earlier. Our junior varsity kids did well, too and it was a step forward for us.”
Jack noted that the JV scored about three times, and the varsity put five touchdowns on the board to none for WT.
“We didn’t let them cross mid field,” Jack said. “Our intensity was good, and we did a good job of executing on both sides of the ball.”
The Broncos will open their 2010-2011 season at home in Bronco Stadium this Friday, August 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m. against the New Deal Lions.
“We are excited about New Deal,” Jack said. “It will be a big opener for us. They were 13-1 last year and their only loss came from Stratford in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
“But right now everything is pointing toward a good season for us. We’ve got another week of practice before our first game, and we’re ready.”
