The Bronco baseball team took on Memphis last week and earned a two-point win at 12-10 in seven innings. The team connected on 12 hits in the game after a slow-hitting first inning.

With freshman Brentley Gaines on the mound, the Cyclones did not score until the third inning. However, their big inning came in the fifth when they scored seven runs with Gaines still on the mound. Coach Aaron Smith put Hayden Moore on the mound to begin the sixth and Braylon Rice in the seventh to stop the Cyclones at the plate. They were able to put two more runs on the board before the Broncos got another chance on offense.

The seventh inning turned out to be golden for the Broncos as they were able to take advantage of the last at-bat. The opposing pitcher gave away three base-on-balls to load the bases before Parker Hanes hit a sacrifice fly to begin the winning rally. Moore and Kreed Robinson added doubles to secure the Bronco win.

Overall, the Broncos had 12 hits, six walks, and eight strike-outs. Robinson had six hits and a stolen base and Gaines knocked down five hits and two stolen bases. Shaun Childers added three hits and one stolen base, while Hanes, Moore, Aiden Burnam, and Hudson Howard each earned a hit.

Later in the week, the Broncos met up against the Floydada Whirlwinds and failed to put runs on the board losing 4-18. Robinson slammed a triple and Rice added a double, but the Broncos could only get one run home in the first and another two runs in the third. Floydada held a 6-3 advantage after three innings with Rice on the mound. Hanes came into the game as relief in the fourth.

Robinson hit a triple and two more hits, and Rice had a double and two singles. Klay Wilkins got his bat going in the fifth with a double to the outfield, and Gaines had a single and a stolen base.

The Broncos will play Quanah at home on Friday, at 4:00 p.m. to finish their regular season play.

Clarendon senior speedster Madi Benson keeps on winning races in her final season as a Clarendon Lady Bronco. Benson totally dominated the 800m and the 1600m races at the Area track meet and became the top runner in both events. She will advance to the regional meet to be held on the WTAMU campus in Canyon on May 1 and 2.

Benson, who has been running strong since her debut in high school track, has qualified every year in the running events. This year she blasted the field in the 800m with a time of 2:24.04 which was three seconds ahead of the field. Her time of 5:46.83 in the 1600m run was impressive and a good distance ahead of the second-place time of 5:54.83.

Joining Benson at the regional meet will be up and comer Addy Havens, who has been solid in both cross-country and track. Havens finished third in the 3200m race and earned the right to advance. She ran the race in a time of 13:15.09 was not far off the first-pace of 12:49.55. Havens also ran fifth in the 1600-meter crossing the finish line in a time 6:23.64.

Brilynn Bruce qualified in the 200m dash with a solid time of 26.21, just under a minute behind the top qualifier.

Also competing, but not advancing: Emmarie Holland seventh in the 400m, 5th in the 800m, and sixth in the mile relay. At 4:30.71. The other members of the mile relay are Elliot Frausto, Havens, and Benson. The 800m relay was sixth with a time of 1:53.36 and members of the relay are Frausto, Laken Smith, Sequoia Weatherton and Bruce. The sprint relay was run by Frausto, Smith, Weatherton, and Bruce. The foursome finished in a time of 51.79 for fifth place. Smith also competed in the long jump finishing in sixth place with a distance of 32’11”.

The Lady Broncos have had a good year and finished their regular season in second place in the district race just behind the Floydada Lady Winds.

They will begin the playoffs with a best two of three against West Texas on April 23 and 24. The first game will be played at home at 5:00 p.m. with the second game being played at Stinnett, also at 5 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played 30 minutes after the end of the second game in Stinnett.

Stats and other details of the Floydada game were not available from the school by press time.

The Broncos made a good showing at the Area track meet held last week and will compete in the regional meet in Canyon on the WTAMU campus May 1 and 2.

The 400m relay claimed second place with a time of 44.09, just narrowly missing the top time of 43.83. Kaleb Mays, Mike Randall, Brice Wagner, and Don’Jae Orr made up the quick-footed team.

Joining them will be those running the 800m relay that finished third overall with a time of 1:31.97 and was run by Caleb Herbert, Dakotah Jameson, Wagner, and Mays. Orr also will advance in the 100m dash with his third-place finish at 11.54. The first paced runner ran the 100m in a time of 11.02.

Wagner was sixth in the 200m at 23.43 and Mays was eighth at 29.17. Tristen Ybarra, who has run well all season, finished seventh in the 1600m at 5:20.18 and fifth in the 3200m with a time of 11:32.27. Orr was seventh in the long jump with a leap of 19’2 ¼”, and Wagner was eighth in that event with a distance of 19’2”.

The Clarendon Broncos got off to a stellar start racking up eight runs in the first inning from the plate in Quanah last week. The offensively strong team defeated the Quanah Indians 18-4.

Clarendon dominated from the first pitch and never looked back. Braylon Rice’s double and Shaun Childers’ RBI sent a message in the Broncos’ first at bat. In the fifth, Hayden Moore slammed a pitch to the fence and turned the bases for a home run.

Overall, the Broncos were strong at the plate and took advantage of pitches in the strike zone. As a team, the Broncos connected for several hits in the game that kept the Indians chasing down balls. Rice, Moore, and Brance Bell ran the bases well and collected two stolen bases each while Klay Wilkins and Hudson Howard grabbed one each.

With Howard and Kreed Robinson on the mound, the Bronco defense exploded with strike-outs and put-outs in the five-inning game. The Indians managed some hits but could not get passed the Broncos’ solid defense.

The Broncos faced off against Lockney on April 10 and took the win by three at 8-5 in the seventh. Lockney held the early lead until the Broncos tied it up after four. After allowing one more run in the fifth, the Broncos roared back in the final inning to get the win.

The Bronco pitchers struggled from the mound initially with Wilkins allowing three walks and a single before giving up the reins to Parker Haynes who came in to finish the inning with a strikeout and throwing a runner out at home. Haynes put out three of the first four hitters in the second, third, and fourth innings to give the Broncos the boost they needed.

Offensively, the Broncos were able to reach base on two walks and one error in the sixth with Aiden Burnam, Rice, and Gaines putting hits in play to take the lead and get the win. They were able to hold Lockney scoreless in their final at-bat.

The Broncos will travel to Floydada on April 17 and take on Wellington at home on April 21. They will play Quanah again in their last regular season game on April 24.

The Bronco sprint relay turned in a time of 43.97 to out run the field in the team’s 400m at the district track meet held at Panhandle last week.

The relay won with a time of 43.97 and was run by Kaleb Mays, Michael Randall, Bryce Wagner, and Don’Jae Orr. The foursome will be headed to the Area meet in Panhandle April 17.

Long distance runner Trysten Ybarra was the district champion in the 3200m run with a time of 11:23.03 and second in the 1600m run at 5:15.67 which was just behind the first-place time of 5:13.80.

Orr was fourth in the 100m at 11.33 and Mays was third in the 200m with a time of 22.93. Wagner was fourth in that same race with a time of 23.03. Wagner and Orr will also compete in the long jump finishing third and fourth with jumps of 20’5 ¾” and 20’4 ½”.

Those placing but not advancing was Randall with a fifth-place finish at 11.36 in the 100m, and jumped 5’8” for fifth in the high jump. Paxton English was sixth in the high jump at 5’8” and was 8th in the triple jump at 33’10 ¼”. The 800m relay was fifth with a time of 1:38.60 and was run by Kreed Robinson, Wagner, Orr, and Mays.

The junior varsity competed as well and Markael Anderson was first in the 100m at 12.23. Anderson was on the 800m relay team that finished second with a time of 1:40.22 along with Michael Shattuck, Braxton Gribble, and Caleb Herbert. Dakotah Jameson was first in the 110m hurdles at 20.73 and Shattuck was fourth at 16’3 ½” in the long jump. Brentley Gaines was sixth in that even with a 15’3” jump. Jaden Guerra was third in the 800m at 2:36.60 and Aiden Burnam was eighth at 2:49.75. Easton Caffey was third in the 400m at 58.71 and Jameson was 6th at 1:01.34. Shattuck finished eighth in the 200m at 26.26 and Klay Wilkins and Parker Hanes was fifth and seventh respectively with times of 12.71 and 13.02.
